What is Entertaiment?

Articles

Entertaiment is a broad term for anything that offers diversion or amusement. It can be something as simple as a clown at a birthday party or as large as a stadium rock concert. It’s also a form of hospitality, as in entertaining guests. The word derives from the Old French entretenir, which has the same root as the Latin tenere. It originally meant to hold inside or support, but has since come to mean to amuse or distract.

Entertainment often hits on themes that our brains were evolved to deeply respond to, such as social backstabbing or murders. Moreover, it is evolving into ever-larger formats and audiences. It is also very adaptive, with many forms able to cross over different media. Examples include movies, theater, and music.
